Children’s Defense Fund/Minnesota

Focus Area: Advocacy in Early Childhood

Grant Amount: $10,000

Based in St. Paul, serves statewide. Children’s Defense Fund of Minnesota staffs and is the fiscal agent for Voices and Choices for Children, a three-year-old coalition that works to build power in communities of color and American Indian communities to support policies that contribute to the overall well-being of young children in their communities. The coalition has grown to more than 30 organizations participating across the state.

Grant supports continuing work on the 2018-19 legislative agenda for Voices and Choices for Children. The agenda focuses on three issues: increased investments in the Childcare Assistance Program that would fully fund the program and increase provider reimbursement rates, which are woefully low, no mandatory BA requirements for early childhood teachers and providers, and finally, the establishment of a Community Solutions Fund. Grant funding also supports a candidate forum for the 2018 election.
