Hmong American Partnership

Focus Area: Early Childhood

Grant Amount: $10,000

Based in St. Paul, serves the Twin Cities metro area. In 2015, HAP opened a Montessori school serving the Hmong community in east St. Paul. Named Hmoob Toj Siab Children’s House, the preschool is the nation’s first bilingual, bicultural Hmong-English Montessori school and has recently earned a four-star Parent Aware rating for its high-quality programming.

Grant supports expanding HAP’s Montessori language learning and preservation curriculum. Using both Hmong and English, staff are in the beginning stages of implementing “sandpaper letters,” a Montessori literacy tool, and they are creating and publishing a line of reading books to promote children’s literacy. The dual-language story books will not only help promote literacy and reading skills, they will also help preserve Hmong cultural stories.
