Centro Tyrone Guzman

Focus Area: Early Childhood

Grant Amount: $15,000

Located in south Minneapolis. Begun in 1974, Centro is the oldest and largest multi-service Latino organization in Minneapolis and provides services to low-income Latino families in the Twin Cities.

Grant supports a project to increase Centro’s internal capacity to support the emotional and mental health needs of the children who attend Siembra, Centro’s dual-language Montessori early childhood program. Many of Centro’s Latinx clients are facing great stress in the current political climate and are experiencing high levels of trauma. Latinx children in Minnesota are also the cultural group least prepared to succeed in kindergarten. This set of programs will help staff to deal with the mental health issues that its families’ children are experiencing due to trauma and help the children be ready to succeed in kindergarten.
