ComMUSICation

Focus Area: Youth Development

Grant Amount: $10,000

Located in St. Paul. ComMUSICation is an intensive afterschool choral-based program inspired by the Venezuelan El Sistema program that uses music to inspire and motivate at-risk youth. It serves families in the St. Paul Promise Neighborhood, a low-income area where few students are able to afford a high-quality music education. The program has two choirs and includes field trips to music community partners, mentorships for students with practicing musicians, and homework help.

Grant supports expanding to the Eastside Boys and Girls Club. Grant funds will support a pilot during the summer program at both this and the Mt. Aire Boys and Girls Club site to test out potential electives such as movement and auxiliary percussion, in addition to the existing CMC classes of singing and music. The electives will then be offered in the fall program at both sites.
