Project FINE

Focus Area: Youth Development

Grant Amount: $15,000

Based in Winona, serving Winona and surrounding area. Established in 1990, Project FINE serves refugee and immigrant families, with a focus of helping the newcomers overcome barriers so they can begin building a new life, and easing the integration of these ethnically diverse families into the local community. Its mission is achieved through a series of language and acculturation services, as well as referrals to existing services in the community.

Grant supports growth of Project FINE’s Kid’s Cultural Club, launched in 2017 and designed to help 50 youth ages 5-12 to increase their knowledge and acceptance of other cultures and to form relationships with youth from other cultures. The new component will expand options for youth to learn a new language. Project FINE will offer 14 language sessions over the next year, 7 in Hmong and 7 in Spanish. This will allow participants to develop their language skills and will provide an opportunity for bi-cultural youth to gain self-confidence and leadership skills by serving as helpers during language lessons.
